Goddamn, I love LOST. Spoilers from last night's episode after the jump...
Goddamn, I love this show.
Tonight's episode revealed that Penny and Desmond didn't waste any time after his rescue and, 3 years later, have a son that looks at least a couple years old. No big deal, that, as there are plenty of people having kids on that show.
Other than the episode opening with his birth, Desmond's son doesn't seem too important in the context of things. He's one more symbol of Desmond's newfound life and freedom with Penny, and one more point of conflict when Desmond has to face his new memories and obligations to Faraday. What struck me, though, was a scene near the end of the episode, where Desmond mentions his son's name in passing. It isn't contrived or made into a "big reveal," it's just a natural part of the conversation.
Charlie.
One more emotional link between these "strangers," presented in a completely subtle and appropriate way. Some shows would have spent 5 minutes flashing back to scenes from Desmond and Charlie's friendship, and of course we'd relive his tragic death. We don't need any of that, though. It's all there, if you want it, and if you don't care, they aren't wasting any time.
I do love this show, and I miss the hell out of Charlie.
Are you sure that this Charlie is only named for Charlie, and is not - in fact, Charlie?

I can only echo Spook's enthusiasm. And to think that I resisted it for so long.
Scenes at the airport where waaaaaaaaay back in the shot, you can see Jack sitting at the bar with Anna-Lucia. Sun turns off the TV in her apartment with Jin and what's playing, but Exposé? Stuff that, were I not watching it with a veteran the first time 'round, I would have completely missed. As soon as I knew it was there, I realized that the "Easter Eggs" were everywhere. It makes me wonder how long the shots take to compose and how many takes they require.
Sadly, I'm still looking for the "new branch" in this season. I thought I had it when Dr. Chang was the opening scene character, but they haven't quite gotten back around to him yet. It does feel a bit like an extension of the previous season, but that is to be expected. Perhaps this season's theme will simply be, "When". I'm just craving the depth and introspection of yesteryear. On the other hand, having a few major plot elements explained doesn't really hurt.
