fableous

Lately, I've been spending a good chunk of time in Albion, which has been enjoyable.  Last night, however, I was struck with a profound realization about the game, and my time with it.  All things considered, it may be the most immersive role-playing experience that I've ever had with a videogame... and the experience kind of hit me from behind out of nowhere.  Without further ado, I bring you my memoirs, as they stand so far...  (spoiler-free, as far as the main questline goes)

too human impressions, or how i learned to love the bomb, or HOLY SHIT, A BLOG ENTRY!

Last week saw the release of a long-anticipated Xbox360 exclusive title, Too Human. There are a multitude of reviews available, so this won't be any kind of comprehensive review and rating, but I do have some things to say about the game.

I finished my first run through the single player campaign this weekend, which may seem surprising for an RPG that only released last week.  My playtime was right around the 10 hour mark, although I'd spent a few hours messing around with another character.  This seems short, but Too Human is intended to play something like Phantasy Star Online before it... there are four large dungeons that scale in difficulty with you as you level up, and you can replay them many times for better loot and to have fun playing co-op with a friend.  I finished the game at level 28, and the level cap is 50.  There are also 5 different character classes, most of which play quite differently, and the additional draw of completing ultra-rare level 50 armor sets.

Those who know me are probably thinking that all this doesn't really sound like my cup o' tea.  After all, I quit WoW pretty quickly after hitting 60, and never even made it to 70 in the expansion... the never-ending endgame loot search never really did it for me.   To be fair, I'm going off of around 15 hours of Too Human, versus several days worth of gametime in WoW.   I can't promise I'll ever make it to level 50 in Too Human, and certainly not with every class... but after finishing the single player campaign, I'm definitely hungry to go back for more.  I'd love to play some co-op as well, so here's hoping that these impressions inspire at least a few of you to pick up the game.

More detailed (but spoiler-free) impressions, kudos and criticisms continue after the break...

mr. whedon, it has been too long

Act One of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog is now freely available... for a limited time, as I understand it.  I just finished watching it (twice), and it is simply fantastic.   Watch it immediately, or I'm afraid we can't be friends.

Act Two drops on Thursday (7/17), and Act Three on Saturday (7/19).  After that, it goes offline and will eventually come out on DVD.  At least, I think that's how it works.  Doesn't matter anyway... since you are already over there watching it... aren't you?

the internets are magical

Two consecutive posts on TheBBPS, two equally(?) disturbing music videos.  Yep, that's the kind of weekend it has been.

Go see Hellboy 2, everybody!

slacktivism

Turns out that Google Reader has added a nifty little "notes" function to its shared items... which is exactly what I felt was missing.  If you're wondering why this blog has no content, blame Google's insistence on making it super easy for me to be extra lazy.... and check out the shared items link right over there --->

so yeah, RAM accomplished

...a few days ago, actually.  Pretty speedy replacement, as these things go, and everything was peachy keen after that.  Got to spend this weekend setting things up and moving old files around... playing with Windows Media Center and realizing that it really isn't going to do a lot for me, at least right now.  Still, having it around to play with and getting XP Pro at $10 cheaper isn't something I can really complain about.  Once I'm comfortable that everything is where I'd like it, I'll think about re-purposing the old girl for something fun.

Haven't really pushed the new beast too far... just not much of a PC gamer, I guess.  I can actually run the Zune software in a semi-usable state, so I guess that is something.  Given that I'm not really a fan of FPS or RTS... anyone got any nifty PC gaming suggestions?

I did get to play the latest episode of Sam & Max: Season Two at higher detail... not exactly taxing, but still nice.  One more ep to go, wish it was more.  If you haven't played them, you really need to pick up season one, or at least the free episode.

Also played some Audiosurf, which is a dynamite way to waste truly disturbing amounts of time without realizing it.

installinomicon: liveblogging my new pc

So, all the parts and pieces have arrived, and it's time to put them together and see what I can break.  I've been inspired to share this most-likely-and-sorta-hopefully-boring experience with you, my friends.  So follows a grand adventure in extremely-amateur geekery and perhaps some sad attempt at wit.  It Begins!

long time coming

New PC parts are on the way!  I'm not getting my hopes up, but a little luck and Newegg/UPS love could have me building over the weekend.  Considering I've had my current PC for about 7 years now with minimal upgrades, I think it is time.

New Specs:

  • Intel Core 2 Duo - 2.66GHz
  • 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 800 Dual Channel SDRAM
  • GeForce 8600GT 256MB  PCI Express x16
  • 2x 250GB 7200 RPM SATA-300 Hard Drives (hopefully set up in an Intel Matrix RAID)
  • Windows XP MCE 2005
Just about $950, after shipping, all told.  That also includes a little PC tool kit and anti-static wrist strap that I've been wanting to have for a while.  Here's hoping everything comes together as expected.  Thanks, Federal Income Tax Return!
